In the early west, big knives were often a trappers last-ditch defensive weapon. As the frontier changed, so did big bowies. The blades started to get smaller as guns got better. But the bowies, got better too, and by the mid 1800's this type of well-ground blade with a buffalo horn handle would be greatly prized. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts®.
